MT. MARGARET BACKCOUNTRY

Mt. St. Helens and Spirit Lake

The Mt. Margaret Backcountry is located north of Spirit Lake in the Mt. St. Helens National Monument directly in the face of the eruption blast zone. Closed to camping after the eruption in 1980 until 1999, this is a unique area of the world.  Pristine lakes, streams, waterfalls, herds of elk, and blowdown - there's no other place like it.  This the only area open for camping in the Blast Zone within the St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.

Access to the area is strictly limited with the party size limited to four - your guide and up to three clients.  You may not see another person once we leave the trailhead.  We camp in desginated areas eash with prepared tent platforms and solar potties!

Experience the effects of the blast of the 1980 eruption and witness the regeneration of life in this unforgettable trip.

We usually do these trips in the summer and fall, given availability of guides and permits.  Maximum group size is four persons (three clients and one guide). We can do day hikes and trips of two to four days.

Prices include transportation from the Portland area, guide, meals, and tents and kitchen on overnight trips.

Porter Support is available!
