Crater Lake
Crater Lake is one of the natural wonders of the World and is the only national park in Oregon. Crater Lake was formed 7,700 years ago when 12,000’/3,659m Mt. Mazama erupted. The eruption destroyed the summit cone
and lava flows drained the magma chamber, leading to a collapse of the upper mountain. Over the centuries, the six mile/10km diameter caldera has filled with water, resulting in the deepest (1,932’/589m) lake in the United States. The lake surface elevation is 6,178’/1,884m and the rim varies from about 7,000’/2,134m to the summit of Mt. Scott at 8,926’/2,721m.
