CRATER LAKE
Crater Lake is one of the natural wonders of the World
and is the only national park in Oregon. Crater Lake was formed 7,700
years ago when 12,000’ Mt. Mazama erupted. The eruption destroyed
the summit cone
and
lava flows drained the magma chamber, leading to a collapse of the upper
mountain. Over the centuries, the six miles in diameter caldera has filled with
water, resulting in the deepest (1,932’) lake in the United States. The
lake surface elevation is 6,178’ and the rim varies from about 7,000’ to the
summit of Mt. Scott at 8,926’.
