Greetings from Oregon Peak Adventures, This is the June 2002 Oregon Peak Adventures Newsletter. You are receiving this because you are a past client, you have asked about us, you are family, or friends. So have a read. If you don't wish to receive any further Newsletters, just reply with "Remove" in the Subject and we actually will take you off the list. We're moving toward summer in Oregon and even though it's still raining at times, the days are getting warmer and brighter. We're looking forward a great summer! OUTDOOR SKILLS TRAINING We have three outdoor skills classes scheduled for June. These are presented in cooperation of Lake Oswego and West Linn Parks and Recreation Departments, and Portland Community College. ALPINE MOUNTAINEERING covers basic snow climbing skills appropriate for most of the standard snow climbs on the Cascade volcanoes. The class session will be held 6-9 PM at the US Bank Building, Upper level, 120 N State Street, Lake Oswego. The all day field session near Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood will be held on June 15. For more information see http://www.oregonpeakadventures.com/mountain.htm on the website. LAND NAVIGATION covers basic map and compass skills and an introduction to the uses of a GPS receiver. The classroom session will be held 6-9 PM June 19 at the US Bank Building. The field session will be held on June 22 in Washington Park in Portland. For more information see http://www.oregonpeakadventures.com/map&.htm on the website. WILDERNESS SURVIVAL covers mental and physiological aspects of surviving a short-term emergency. We will discuss survival equipment, planning, setting priorities, and responding to situations. The Classroom sessions are 6-9 PM at the US Bank Building on June 25, or at Hawthorne Farms Athletic Club, 4800 NE Belknap Court, Hillsboro, OR on June 26. The overnight field session at Mt. Hood is June 29-30. For more information see http://www.oregonpeakadventures.com/wilderne.htm on the website. NEPAL We're still planning to go on our trekking and climbing trip to the Khumbu region of Nepal this October-November. Since my wife Phyllis has informed me that I WILL be present to celebrate her Birthday, our gathering date in Kathmandu is now October 29. We're also not going to attempt Mera Peak. So our return date back to the US after the trek and Island Peak climb is now November 24 which will put us back in time for the Thanksgiving holiday (11/28). Our friend Don Messerschmidt in Kathmandu is very positive about group safety in the Khumbu region. Clearly, with a record number of 54 climbers summitting Everest recently, many climbing expeditions are feeling very secure. We have added a Nepal Situation page to the website at http://www.oregonpeakadventures.com/nepal_situation.htm with current updates on events in Nepal. TANZANIA We already have five people signed-up for the Tanzania trip 2-22 February 2003. This will consist of a nine-day climb of Kilimanjaro, a five day safari, and four days in Zanzibar. There is a limit of 15 climbers on the Kili climb, so if you are planning to go you need to be getting your $500 deposit in. There is a $200 trip discount if your deposit arrives by June 30. See http://www.oregonpeakadventures.com/Tanzania.htm for more information. I'm thinking about climbing Mt. Kenya prior to the Kili climb. Let me know if you might be interested. TIPS SECTION Phyllis and I went on a road trip in April to the southwest US. We went to Death Valley in California; Prescott, Humphrey's Peak, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Canyon de Chelly, and Navaho National Monument in Arizona; and Natural Bridges and Capital Reef in Utah. Highlights were the Pupfish in Salt Creek, driving through Titus Canyon in our low clearance Audi (High clearance vehicles are suggested. Good idea!), and Scotty's Castle in Death Valley; and the full-day tour in the Canyon de Chelly. The next week I flew/drove to the state summits of Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Guadalupe Peak in Texas was pretty neat, but I wouldn't think you would necessarily make a special trip to them unless you are somewhat strange. I now have been to the summits of 35 states. A couple of things which made the trips go really well was taking a case of bottled water with us and listening to books on tape we checked out of the library. We were well hydrated and entertained. The AAA Triptik makes navigation much easier without having to struggle with big maps. We hope you can do a trip with us soon. We love sharing this wonderful country with new people, and it's always great to see old friends. If you want to do something and you don't see it, or a scheduled date doesn't work for you, get in touch (877 965-5100) or email at info@Oregonpeakadventures.com and we'll see if we can work something out. Again, if you don't wish to receive this newsletter, please reply with Remove in the subject line and we'll cease and desist. Best Regards, Joe Whittington |
