Join us on a trek to Mt. Kenya.  Climb the trekker peak Pt. Lenana, or climb to the summit of 17,058' Mt Kenya.  Depending on weather and conditions, our 5th class summit climb will either be by Shipton's Normal Route or the North Face Standard Route.  At the end of the climb, we can join our Tanzania group for Safari and Zanzibar.

Itinerary

June 5.   Arrive in Nairobi

June 6.   Recovery day in Nairobi

June 7.  Drive from Nairobi by private van to Nanyuki for lunch, dinner and  accommodation.
 
June 8.  Drive from Nanyuki to Sirimon Gate (8,580'/2,600m).  We trek 5.4 miles/9 KM to Old Moses Camp (10,900'/3,300m).  Lunch on the way; dinner and overnight at camp.

June 9.  Hike to Shipton Camp (13,860'/4,200m) 7.2 miles/12 km via the MacKinder Valley.  Lunch on the way; dinner and overnight at camp.  If we opt for the North Face Standard Route, we will continue on less than one km to the Kami Hut(14,420'/4,400m).

North Face Standard Route
June 10.  From the Kami Hut we traverse south to the gully between Krapf Rognon and Batian to begin our climb to the Batian summit.  We will plan to do a bivouac enroute for a two day round trip.

June 11.  Rappel/descend back to Kami Hut.  Relax, dinner and overnight.

June 12.  Hike to the Austrian Hut (14,190'/4,300m), via Pt. Leanne,(16,450'/ 4,985m), for dinner and overnight.

June 13.  Hike to MacKinder's Camp (14,190'/4,300m) for dinner and overnight.

June 14.  Descend down to Naro Moru Gate, (2,600m) through Met Station, (3,100m).  We will meet the vehicle at the gates and be driven to Nairobi. There will be a stop made for lunch.

Shipton Normal Route
June 10.  If we opt for the Shipton Normal route, we will hike four hours to Austrian Hut (4,300m), via Simba Col.  Have lunch at camp,  check our climbing gear ,and review the climb procedures.  From our camp we have great views of the Lewis Glacier. Dinner and overnight. 

June 11.  Wake at 4:30am. Full breakfast will be served.  Hike across the Lewis Glacier to the base of the climb up the Normal Route.  Climb to Nelion summit (17,021'/5,188m/), then cross the Gate of the Mists to the summit of Batian (17,058'/5,199m).  Return to Nelion and spend the night  in the Howell Hut.
              
June 12.  Catch the sunrise and perhaps view the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro.  Rappel  to Austrian Hut  for dinner and overnight.

June 13.  Hike to MacKinder's Camp (14,190'/4,300m) via Pt. Leanne (16,355'/4,985m) for dinner and overnight.

June 14.  Descend 12 miles/20km down to Naro Moru Gate(8,580'/2,600m) through Met Station, (10,230'/3,100m).  We will meet the vehicle at the gates and be driven to Nairobi. There will be a stop made for lunch.

(If you wish to continue with the Tanzania trip, we will need to be in Moshi no later than June 17.  We have a couple of weather days on the mountain or the option of staying in Nairobi for a couple of days if all goes to plan.  There are a lot of things to do in Nairobi; so we will plan on being flexible.  There may be added lodging, food, and attraction charges for any extra days in Nairobi, but it would be less than $100 per day.)

Price:  $2,000.  Includes accommodations, all meals on trek and climb, One Kenyan and one OPA technical climbing guide, and equipment, porters, and transportation including van from Nairobi to Moshi.

The Batian summit climb is limited to a party size of four - three slots are open.  We can also take up to 10 trekkers for the Pt. Leanne (16,355') non-technical climb.

Deposit of $500 is required by March 1, 2005, with balance due May 1, 2005.  Upon receipt of deposit, a detailed information packet will be forwarded to you.
