Expedition Climbing

Learn the basics of climbing a big mountain like Denali.  The lecture session covers skills and techniques and clothing and equipment requirements.   In the field sessions you will practice the techniques of  roped travel, traveling with sleds on glaciers, establishing a protected camp, and thriving in a harsh snow environment.  We'll also cover basic survival techniques. To gain maximum benefit, you should have the experience or instruction equivalent to our Alpine Mountaineering and Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue Courses.

We will drive to  Mt. St. Helens , rig-up for glacier travel, and snowshoe or ski to above tree line at about the 5,000' level.  We will set-up a camp appropriate for an exposed high elevation site.  If weather condition are appropriate, we will climb to the rim via the Dyer Glacier or Swift Creek Route.  (If weather and snow conditions are adverse on St. Helens, we may hold the field session at Mt. Hood instead.)

COST: 1 person - $600, 2 persons - $500 each, 3-10 persons - $400 each.  Includes transportation from the Portland area,  textbook and course materials, ice ax, crampons, snowshoes, tents, meals, and group gear.
